The Wombats: I Screwed Up

A couple of months ago I reported that The Wombats' debut album would be out this week. Obviously, I was wrong. I really wish I knew where I read that so I could punch them.

The real release date is Monday, November 5th, and it will be available through all of your favorite retailers. If you're in the UK, go buy it, the album is brilliant! A US date is pending, but I hear it will be sometime early in the new year.

Cut Off Your Hands

Like pretty much every blogger this side of the Mississippi, I fell in love with Cut Off Your Hands during CMJ
. Even though I'm not too fond of their haircuts or their choice of a band name, I have to give it to the little buggers from New Zealand... they're really freaking good. Their shows were characterized by a frenzied exuberance that only comes from the unrestrained arrogance of youth. And, maybe, a few too many drinks.

I feared that my high opinion of Cut Off Your Hands would change once I returned to "normal life," but their music still impresses two weeks later in a quiet apartment. Full of jangly guitars, big dance beats, and sing-a-long choruses, the band is everything I wish The Cribs would be... only better. Unfortunately, they won't be playing on this side of the world anytime soon so I'll have to make do with my copy of their EP, Blue on Blue.

Dragonette

WARNING: The video pasted above contains some explicit material that may not be appropriate for our younger readers. It's basically Boogie Nights in music video form. You've been warned.

Dragonette is a group of Canadian ex-pats, who grew tired of the Mounties and moved away to London. Formed around the core husband and wife duo of Martina Sorbara and Dan Kurtz, the band plays an upbeat, sexy brand of electro-pop full of kitten whisper singing, raunchy synthesizers, and big dance beats. Although I haven't heard their entire debut album Galore (as it hasn't been released state side yet), I am fairly certain that all of their songs are about sex. That's not a bad thing, unless you go to Regent University or BYU or something. Check out this band if you want some fun music to get down to... or just some awesome dance music to perk up your day.

Le Loup

I was so impressed with Le Loup's set at the Sub Pop showcase on Saturday night that I wrote an email to a friend imploring him to take a cab to the venue immediately to hear the rest of their show. The friend didn't show up, but I thoroughly enjoyed the band's thickly woven, gorgeous instrumentals and later kept repeating how I thought the band was as powerful as Arcade Fire.

In lieu of a proper write up (one is forthcoming, I promise to write it once I get more than three hours of sleep in one night)... here's a video of the DC band performing "To The Stars! To The Night!" from a performance earlier in the year.

LA group Health just released their debut album on Lovepump United last month and for the rest of the week, they are taking over NYC/CMJ. CMJ 2k7 Preview: Tuesday

It's 12:43am and I just got back from seeing the Smashing Pumpkins play a two and a half hour show at the Orpheum. After an especially hectic day of work and a ton of second hand pot smoke from the thirty somethings in front of me at the show, I'm pretty tuckered out... so I apologize in advance for being lazy and putting this post in list form.

If you happen to be in New York for CMJ, I'd highly recommend checking out the following three bands tonight:

7:00pm Care Bears on Fire @ Crash Mansion
These little kids rock much harder than those brats in School of Rock. Playing bonafide punk/garage rock with killer hooks, you'd never imagine that these kids are actually kids. I saw them back in February at the Exitfare showcase and all I can say is wow.

[Myspace] Care Bears on Fire

10:00pm Oppenheimer @ Crash Mansion
If you haven't heard of this awesome electro-infused indie rock duo from Belfast, then you've obviously been living under a rock. They put on a killer show, make sure to check them out at one of their many dates at CMJ.

[Myspace] Oppenheimer

11:30pm The Rosewood Thieves @ Southpaw
If you like your indie rock mixed with a little folk and country, then you'll probably love this genre-bending group. I'm not too familiar with this band yet, but I plan to be...

Die Romantik

Die Romantik is a three piece from Brooklyn that plays a brooding sort of pop music with an interesting epic, yet theatrical flair. Think Belle and Sebastian mixed with Radiohead mixed with a touch of turn of the century chamber music (twentieth century, not twenty first). I haven't heard their entire debut album, but I'm definitely intrigued and can't wait to hear more of this promising band at CMJ. They'll be joined on stage by Division Day, Air Traffic, Dragonette, Arizona, and Christopher Denny, so don't miss it!

These snotty art school dropouts who are hungry for the dollar are back in the US for CMJ. Foals blew me away during their all too brief set earlier this year at SXSW, but with new tunes and time drilling their songs into my head, this go around should be way more fun. Not like I didn't have fun before.

Pop Montreal 2k7 Recap + We're Marching On

This past weekend's Pop Montreal festival was an exhausting, but fun affair. It lasted from Oct. 3rd-7th, and although I was there just on Thursday, Friday & Saturday, I saw enough great new bands to give me a few weeks of posts!

On top of that, this is one of the most well run festivals I've ever been to. Check-in was organized, the free bag was filled with useful information, the festival guidebook was well laid out and informative with not only tips about bands, but useful hints for navigating Montreal and there were frequent updates sent out via text message. Count me in for 2k8.

This week I'll be recapping some of my favorite bands from the fest, and it all starts with Toronto's We're Marching On.

I wrote about these guys two years ago, but after a few months, they quietly slipped into the background. When I was glancing over this year's PM schedule, I saw that they were playing, so I knew it was my chance to finally see them -- I don't think they've ever played a show in the States. They went on around 8 pm Friday night at Preloved, which is a rather unique vintage clothing store, and played an exciting 30 minute plus set with the lights out.

These guys just may have been the best thing I saw all weekend as they managed to pack a small store full of kids that were hanging on every note and every word. The crowd knew all of the words and didn't miss a beat when accenting the high notes with fist pumps and awkward white kid dance moves.

The band's Argh! Umph! Ahh! EP has been floating around for awhile and when an album finally drops, I sense big things for these guys. I am really surprised that more blogs have not caught on yet.

Black Kids

Black Kids

The internet is abuzz with talk about Black Kids, an unsigned five-piece band from Jacksonville, Florida, of all places. After cutting their teeth opening for cool bands like Lo Fi Fnk, Anathallo and Elf Power, Black Kids is on the cusp of breaking out on their own. If you've had a chance to listen to their quality E.P.,
Wizard of Ahhhs, then that fact shouldn't come as much of a surprise. (FYI--the E.P. is available for free on their Myspace).

Black Kids' sound is distinctly rooted in 80s pop, full of synthesizers, jangly guitars, and a lead singer who probably could pass as a blood relative of Robert Smith (if it weren't for skin color). Their songs are full of some fantastic tongue in cheek lyrics about heartbreak, as well as some catchy synth riffs and male/female call and response choruses. Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if they became the main draw at shows sometime in the very near future. Check them out at CMJ, I know I will.

The Go! Team

I've apparently been living under a rock, because I completely overlooked the fact that The Go! Team released a new album a few weeks ago. Proof Of Youth is not a grand departure from the sound that made them famous--much like 2005's breakthrough Thunder, Lightning, Strike, the record is seeped full of bright horns from the annals of funk and the infectious dance sensibilities of the disco era. This is party starting music, but party starting music with real intelligence.

The Go! Team uses elements from
disparate genres and time periods to compliment and complicate each song. Whether it's rhymes straight from early hip hop ("Flashlight Fight") or the breakneck tempo/attitude of punk ("Universal Speech), cheerleader chants ("Doing It Right") or the light touches of twee ("I Never Needed It Now So Much"), these distinctive components all magically come together in a sound that's both cohesive and enjoyable. Not to mention, dynamic and full of energy. If I sound overly enthusiastic, go buy the album and hit up their shows and I'm sure you'll see what I mean.

super/heater

[Photo Credit: Antonella Fratino] There aren't enough people doing good math rock anymore -- it seems as though the genre's heyday is gone. Seriously, there are only a few out there, perhaps Traindodge and Riddle of Steel. Even DC has been pretty quiet as of late, but I've always been confident that a good genre will never die. Montreal's super/heater remember the glory days and they're technical as fuck to prove it. If all was beautiful in the world, these guys would be rocking out at Pop Montreal, but you can't always get what you want. The band does have a limited two song single, and it can be all yours by visiting their Myspace page.

Pop Montreal 2k7

Hey friends, in case you didn't know, I also write for Stranded In Stereo, which is a pretty awesome site. Check it out sometime.

But anyway, I just did a piece on Pop Montreal for SIS highlighting a few new bands, so I am going to be all lazy and repost some of it here.

By the way, Pop Montreal began yesterday and it goes through Sunday. It's in Montreal, obviously, and if any of you guys are going, hit me up. So here are some of the bands to look out for:

We're Marching On: I was tipped off to these Toronto locals a couple years ago, but in classic Dany-fashion, some other band distracted me and I moved on. I'm glad they're on the schedule because I am still dying to see them. By taking the theory that more is always better and applying it to indie rock, they make a sound that fits like a glove and then immediately tears off your hand. In the best way possible.
[Thursday 10/04 1 am @ Coda // 4119 Saint-Laurent]

Thundrah: When you ask someone "Hey man, I need good bands to check out when I am at Pop Montreal, who should I check out?" and this is the first band they suggest, it's obvious that you're on the same wavelength. These Montreal locals play like Thurston Moore would if he only listened to bands on Dischord. If there were more bands like this, life would be a few steps closer to perfect.
[Wednesday 10/03 11 pm @ Theatre National // 1220 Sainte-Catherine E.]
[mp3] "Weighing & Wanting"

Syme: Do you ever wonder why so many awesome bands come from Norway & Sweden? Syme hails from the former and makes an excellent approximation of what I am going to dub "Norsecore." Their tunes bring to mind Sigur Ros and Mew in that cinematic, almost futuristic way by adroitly balancing melody and noise.
[Friday 10/05 10 pm @ Academy Club // 4445 Saint-Laurent]
[mp3] "Modern Love"

Yelle: She's from France, and while some people might say that's no different than Montreal, that's something that should never be uttered out loud. Fights will ensue. But anyway, back to Yelle. It's a sound built for the dancefloor, perfect for your Justice fans that are craving a bit more of that classic song structure. Her tunes have been blowing up the blogosphere for a minute now, but I have high hopes for her as part of the new French Revolution.

New Division Day Video

Division Day's debut album Beartrap Island came out yesterday on Eenie Meenie -- if you're still not sure about these guys, you can stream the island at Virb. To celebrate, the band made a video for one of the many hits on the record, "Tigers."

Also, the fifth installment of the Beartrap Island maps is above.

Radiohead New Album Details

As if you don't know already. But if you don't, here it is.

Radiohead's new album, In Rainbows, will be out on October 10th, available only on the band's website as a DRM-free mp3 download. As of a couple of hours ago, the site was having some troubles, but to pre-order the record, all you need to do is suggest a price and in nine days, the record is yours.

Radiohead’s fan service, WASTE, is currently taking advance orders for two formats: the album MP3 and the Discbox, which includes double vinyl and CD versions of the record and a second, enhanced CD with additional new songs, artwork, and photographs of the band, all exclusive to the box. Anyone purchasing this deluxe edition will automatically receive the bundled MP3 album on October 10.

Radiohead are currently planning a traditional CD release of In Rainbows for early 2008.
The album was produced by Nigel Godrich.

Diamond Sea

Diamond Sea

When a band bills themselves as "the world's most dangerous band," nine times out of ten they are dangerous alright--dangerously bad. That statistic aside, whoever wrote the Myspace page for the small Montreal-based band Diamond Sea is definitely onto something because the group is really, really good. Their songs are ultra melodic, dreamy soundscapes that truly have the capacity to break your heart. It's literally shoegaze at its best. I can't say enough good things about Diamond Sea, so make sure to check them out this weekend at Pop Montreal if you're lucky enough to attend.
