A few weeks ago, I found myself in New York on a Thursday night with an evening to kill. As I was heading to my hotel, I got an e-mail about a Luke Temple gig at Joe's Pub, so I thought what the hell, I'll go. I'm glad I did -- I was pretty much blown away. His latest release Snowbeast had been sitting on my desk for weeks and I wasn't even planning on listening to it, but this was one of those shows that as a music fan that you can to love, but never expect.
Temple is a singer songwriter, but only because that's the genre he falls into hasn't been invented yet. His latest release is out now on Mill Pond Records, plus you'll be able to catch him on the road this October and November with Chuck Prophet and The Good Life, which includes three local dates.

The Nightjars are a great little rock band from Manchester that I just can't seem to get out of my head. Their songs conjure up memories of The Fall and Sonic Youth with layers of buzzing guitars, syncopated drumming, and brooding vocals in the middle register. Their music is both ambitious and compelling, a combination that is bound to turn some heads.
The band is set to release a limited edition "mini album" on Reveal Records on November 5th. The Nightjars currently have tour dates scattered throughout the United Kingdom through the end of the month--make sure to catch them if you can!
"It is with deep regret that Shitdisco are having to cancel their up coming tour of the United States of America and Canada. Band member Joel Stone was today rushed into hospital. He is being kept there for the next couple of days where specialists will decide what action to take. He has been told he is too unwell to travel for the foreseeable future. The band would like to thank everyone who has booked them to play on this tour, and hope that they will get the chance to play the country soon."
"This hodgepodge of old and new friends began messing around, making noise in the guesthouse of a little ranch, and soon played their first “show” on the porch for some pals. Within months, they were appearing on bills with Silver Lake’s biggest bands (including Cold War Kids and Monsters Are Waiting) and had earned a reputation for explosively energetic live shows..." – LA Weekly
LA's The Deadly Syndrome understand dynamics and the importance of a great script. Their theatrics are combined with an austere innocence, a feeling which is ever present on the band's debut long player on Dim Mak, The Ortolan. Although they've only played a handful of shows, some of the luminaries they've shared the stage with include Cold War Kids, Klaxons and Monsters Are Waiting. No national excursions are planned as of yet, but if you're in LA, make sure you check them out.
This is the third clip off of Send Away The Tigers, and it's pure Manics, quotes and all. For those of you overseas, the single will be available on October 1st.
Apparently cool things do happen in Kentucky -- just ask VHS or Beta. Bring on the Comets, their third full length, is out now on Astralwerks.
The band performs on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on October 1st.

Maybe I'm too "old school," but does it bother anyone else that Paris Hilton is associated with the Smashing Pumpkins in any way, shape or form? Wouldn't the Billy Corgan of 1996 ridicule her and all the other vacuous reality television stars for whoring themselves out for money and fame? I don't care if she's pictured in front of a nuclear explosion to demonstrate some sad truth about celebrity worship in America, seeing her plastic mug on a Pumpkins' release really, really irks me. End rant. Anyway... the video posted above is the Pumpkins' second single "That's The Way [My Love Is]." The video takes the band into a futuristic world equipped with rocket cars, flying cameras, and crazy translucent video screens--think "Rocket" meets "The End Is The Beginning Is The End." It's definitely visually impressive in a monochromatic video game sort of way, but it's not what I was expecting for the most gorgeous song on Zeitgeist. With lush instruments and lyrics like "of course I love you baby, cuz I'm alive," I was definitely envisioning something a bit softer and romantic. Maybe Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris were too busy/expensive to do it up?
The Pumpkins are currently making their way across North America, check out their almost entirely user-generated website for dates, concert videos, etc.

Although Sloan put out Never Hear The End Of It earlier this year on Yep Roc, they just got around to making a video. You can watch the clip for "I've Gotta Try" above.
This track is with Benny Blanco off of the upcoming Bangers & Cash, which is out on 10/09. To celebrate, they will be hosting a new track on their Myspace page ach week up to the release. Here are the first two tracks.
Magnet, aka Even Johansen, will be taking off from Norway soon for an autumn tour with Stars, as well as a couple headlining shows. Despite being a solo effort in the past, Magnet is now a five-piece band, although the group's latest was recorded entirely by Johansen.
The Simple Life, the group's third album, is available now on Filter US Recordings. Ther will be a full US tour, but there's no Boston date. I don't blame them, I wouldn't want to come here either.

So Les Savy Fav had a video contest and a five year old named "Bunnygirl" won -- color me impressed. I always knew indie rockers were a childish bunch!
The band's first new album in six years is anything but a let down -- it may even be their finest piece yet. Let's Stay Friends came out on French Kiss Records yesterday.

Enclosed is this week's installment of the Division Day cover song/remix series, plus the third piece of the map of Beartrap Island. I totally love this song, and it's great what they've done with it. Here is what they have to say about Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence":
“this song became a regular band-van jam in the last year, due mostly to kevin's long-lived love affair therewith- he claims an intense affinity with "silence" since early childhood. when the covers project idea started getting bounced around, this was sort of a shoe-in- a perfect pop song with an elegant melody, tantalizingly simple, but iconic enough to make the undertaking not a little foolishly hubristic. kevin wanted to playfully undermine the original's electro leanings by building the song on a foundation of tube-overdriven acoustic guitar, and this became a great spring-board for increasingly organic textures. i wanted to make the song a kind of conversation between raveled anti-fidelity and unlikely grandeur.”
I am pretty sure I wrote about My Sad Captains awhile ago, but I can't remember and I really don't feel like looking. They had a tune called "All Hat and No Plans" that I couldn't [and still can't] get enough. While I had a few demos, I ran through them and put the band on the backburner, but the other day I was sort of curious, so I looked them up and I saw that they had some new tunes.
Fortuna Pop! put out the band's "Bad Decisions" single earlier this year, a track that splits the difference between Pavement and Belle & Sebastian. According to the group's Myspace page, they have recorded a further set of songs, but concrete release details are pending. Hopefully the next few months will see an album from these chaps.
Is it pretentious that Lil Mama titled her album The Voice of the Young People? The first two singles off the album have been pretty awesome, but we'll have to wait until Nov. 27th to hear the rest.
Brooklyn freak folk collective Akron/Family has a new album coming out today on Young God Records. Showcasing the band's continued experimentation with different song forms and instrumentation, Love Is Simple finds Akron/Family tackling genres as varied as psychedelic rock on "Phenomena" and field hollers, Appalachian folk, and even electronica on "Ed Is A Portal." The songs are obtuse and difficult at times, but they are definitely enjoyable if you give them a chance. If you want to expand your musical palate, then make sure to try this group out for size. On October 28th, 14th Floor Records/Warners will release The Wombats' proper debut album, A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation. Girls, Boys & Marsupials was merely a [very good] collection of demos. Once I have a tracklisting, I'll let you guys know.
The band will release a new single, "Let's Dance to Joy Division," on Oct. 15th.
"Let's Dance to Joy Division"
Since the album will be in your hands soon, here's a recap of the band has been up to over the past couple of years.
At first I wasn't going to post this because I didn't think it was Exitfare material, plus you could probably turn on MTV Hits and see this video like 25 times per day. But then I said fuck that because this is a really catchy pop song and it's totally a great way to begin your Monday. Rooney may not be hip, but they can write some damn catchy tunes. They'll have a new album soon, but I am not sure when it comes out -- it's probably not as fun and catchy as this song.
For those of looking for this list last week, sorry I didn't put it up. I've been on the road so much that I dropped the ball. Here is the list early this week, and it looks like there are going to be a lot of tough choices.

Brooklyn band Longwave may be established crowd favorites, but they are without a label -- it's bad, but in this day and age, who needs one anyway? I am not too keen on this whole "new rave" tag that has been attched to certain bands like Klaxons and Shitdisco, but eventhough I don't like the name, the music is pretty awesome.
I'm glad these guys are finally making their way over here, as I've been reading about their legendary shows for a minute now in NME. Dim Mak is handling the release of Kingdom of Fear, which will be out this fall, while the boys will be rocking a bunch of dates, which includes a Boston gig on October 11th.

Well for the most part. They are still doing their NYC and ACL shows.
From drummer Nick Hodgson: “We’d like to apologize to fans in America and Canada, especially those who have already bought tickets, but something had to give. We’ve been extremely busy all year and had no time to focus on the future, we plan to have new material out as soon as possible and we’ve wanted to record all summer. This needs to happen before our European & UK shows at the end of the year so we can play a few of our new songs live, we’re keen to explore new ground, beyond the sound of our first two records, so we’re headed back into the studio to begin that process.”

I know, I know... I wrote about Mobius Bandlast week. But I literally just got my hands on another new song from their forthcoming sophomore album Heaven and felt the overwhelming urge to share it. "Friends Like These" is a weird little song, comprised solely of detached vocals, a bizarre tone-shifting synth riff, and simple electronic drum blips. The song is decidely less lush than the album opener ("Hallie," the track featured last week), but somehow "Friends Like These" seems to be the catchier of the two. I can't stop playing it, which is annoying my boyfriend to no end. I'm going out on a limb here, but I think Heaven is definitely going to be a contender for my favorite album of the year.
Fierce Panda To Release 13th Anniversary Compilation
“As his anniversary compilation, Decade: Ten Years Of Fierce Panda, proves, the ex-NME journalist is to the British music industry what Beckham is to England’s midfield. [Simon] Williams, you see, is golden ears.” - BBC
If the number 13 is unlucky, then why is Fierce Panda releasing this anniversary compilation on Oct. 2nd?
By the way, this is our 700th post. Yay!

As fall rapidly approaches, my mind is preoccupied in anticipation for the week of October 14th. Why? I'll be hitting four Smashing Pumpkins shows, as well as a little festival called the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City. It will be the best week of my life (and probably the most tiring). I thought I'd rub it in a little... IN YOUR FACE!
Anyway, a gazillion more bands have been added to the CMJ 2007 line-up, including Illinois, Georgie James, Mohawk Lodge, Robbers on High Street, M.I.A., Air Traffic, Professor Murder, Anathallo, De Novo Dahl, The Whip, Eagle*Seagull, Band of Horses, The Little Ones, Forget Cassettes, Division Day, Lifetime, The Big Sleep, Japanther, Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Matt & Kim, The Giraffes, Adam Green, Holy Fuck, Shout Out Out Out Out, The Teeth, and We Are Wolves. CMJ is the single best way to find out about new bands, plus it's a great time. Make sure to buy your badge before the price increase goes into effect on September 25th!
Tonight in Boston at Great Scott is sort of hip hop, sort of dub/reggae singer-songwriter, but still not really Jamie T. His debut Panic Prevention just dropped here in the States and he's on the round for a handful of dates, hitting some of the larger markets. We've been all over him for awhile, so we're glad that the rest of the world is catching up, as he puts a unique twist on the sinister gypsy-pop of Mystery Jets.
To celebrate Jamie coming to the States, we're giving away a pair of tickets to the show -- the first person to e-mail me gets them.
Other dates: Wednesday, September 12 – Boston, MA – Great Scott Thursday, September 13 – New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom Saturday, September 15 – Philadelphia, PA – North Star Tuesday, September 18 – Chicago, IL – Schubas Wednesday, September 19 – Minneapolis, MN – 7th Street Entry Saturday, September 22 – Seattle, WA – Crocodile Café Sunday, September 23 – Portland, OR – Doug Fir Lounge Tuesday, September 25 – San Francisco, CA – Slim’s Wednesday, September 26 – Los Angeles, CA – Troubadour
Sometime over the last couple of weeks, The Alones released their debut single Silver onAnother Music = Another Kitchen Records. The last year has brought about a lot of changes for the band, who doubled their ranks to four members to fill out their already explosive sound. The change clearly helped bring The Alones to another level with the band playing higher profile shows to larger audiences and increasingly acclaim over the last few months. Check out their energetic, infectious single below--I can't get it out of my head!
LA's The Gray Kid continues to make music that falls somewhere between hip hop and everything else, perfectly evidenced by his second disc Vultures. He's doing a run over the entire country and Boston is lucky enough to be a stop tonight at the Middle East with Oliver Future. I know it's a Monday night, but this is worth pulling your ass off the couch for.
Other Dates: 9/11 - NEW YORK, NY - Mercury Lounge 9/12 - WASHINGTON, DC - DC9 9/13 - BALTIMORE, MD - Sonar 9/26 - DALLAS, TX - The Cavern 9/28 - FORT WORTH, TX - The Moon 9/29 - AUSTIN, TX - The Parish
Hope you have enjoyed the summer so far (actually, what summer?). Sadly we have some pretty bad news for you. We'll be pulling out of all future gigs and will be taking a big break. Serious personal problems have arisen in camp vulpine and they need to be resolved before things take a plunge into the bottom of a lake. It's a decision none of us are taking lightly as we all feel very strongly about our music, career, fans, gigs, etc, but we really do need a well deserved kip for now.
We just want to thank all the people who came to our gigs , bought are debut record from the amazing 'On The Bone Records' folk, everyone who supported us from the beginning and everyone who helped us in anyway possible.
It's been amazing.
Thanks to everyone!!
MV.xThis is just too bad as they were one of this year's most promising young bands. Let's hope things get better, but in the meantime, at least we have Kubichek!
To build up some excitement for the release of their debut album on Eenie Meenie, Division Day will post a cover or remix over the next eight weeks. Here's the first in the series.

Brooklyn trio Mobius Band are gearing up for a tour of North America in support of their second full length album Heaven, which is set to hit the shelves on October 2nd via Misra Records. Much like their enchanting debut The Loving Sounds of Static, the new album shows the band experimenting in the blurry realm between electronica and indie rock. With canned beats and monochromatic unemotional singing fused together with poppy arrangements, Mobius Band plays a brand of music that's hard to describe and equally hard to put down. The first track on Heaven is available for download below, make sure to check it out! Tour Dates:
